General Overview

Welcome to Reception - Matisse

Reception Team:

Lauren Wright (Class Teacher)

Marion Finch (Early Years Practitioner)

PPA time:

Lauren works out of class on Thursday mornings for her planning, preparation and assessment time (PPA). Marion Finch and Donna Lerman (Teaching Assistant) are in class on Thursdays to cover for Lauren.

Reception Curriculum:

In Reception we have a weekly topic/focus, which stems from the children’s current interests e.g. Dinosaurs, Superheroes or Fairy Tales. We plan activities for each area of our classroom based on this weekly theme. Every week there are 5 focus children, these children are closely observed, we then plan the topic for the following week based on these children’s interests and next steps.

In Reception the children also begin phonics, they learn the Set 1 and 2 sounds and learn how to apply these sounds to read and write words. At Weston Park we follow the RML (Ruth Miskin Literacy) phonics scheme. The children take part in 1:1 reading sessions with their class teacher in the Autumn Term and small group reading sessions from January onwards. Weekly handwriting sessions are taught throughout the year and small group writing sessions from January onwards. Whole class Maths lessons are also taught focusing on number and shape, space and measures.

Please see our Early Years Policy for further information about the seven areas of learning, the characteristics of effective learning and an explanation of how the children learn through a balance of exploration and carefully planned focus activities.
