General Information

Rothko Class General Information

Year 1 – Rothko Team Class teachers: Sarah Canning (Mon – Wed) Harriet Keene (Wed – Fri)

Teaching assistant: Karen Whichelow

Year 1 (Rothko) is the start of Key Stage 1 and the statutory National Curriculum. The first half of the Autumn term is a gradual transition from Reception and the children are given time to choose their own activities as well as work with the teacher on a directed activity. The children continue to have access to sand, water, role-play, construction, painting and fine motor activities.   In the second half of the Autumn term we gradually expect the children to work more independently, choosing and using appropriate equipment that will support them in their learning in all areas of the curriculum.   In year 1, a strong emphasis is placed on working collaboratively and building upon our core habits of learning; resilience, discipline, collaboration, curiosity and creativity.

Maths and English are taught four times a week and Phonics is taught through a synthetic phonics programme called R.M.L (Ruth Miskin Literacy).
Reading is taught in groups several times per week. Children are given a new book twice a week, which we expect to be shared at home.

The children are also taught the Foundation subjects; Science, History, Geography, Art, Design and Technology, Computing, Religious Education, Physical Education, Spanish and PSHE. Whenever possible, we teach these subjects through a cross curricular approach.   We enrich the curriculum by visiting museums, galleries and outdoor learning environments. Children are always expected to be kind to each other, to listen carefully and to be focused during their class activities.

PPA time (planning, preparation and assessment) for Sarah and Harriet will be on Wednesdays covered by Spanish with Enric, Music with James McKone and P.E. with Bob Packham.

 Homework

Each week, the children are given sounds of the week and high frequency words to learn. In addition, another activity will be set, relating to maths or topic. These are set on Fridays and due in on Tuesdays.

Physical Education

PE will be taught on Tuesdays by Sarah and on Wednesdays by Bob in the school hall. Weather permitting, we will go outside where possible. It is essential that children have their PE kits in school for these days.
